Category Attributes

Overview

Category attributes are default custom fields stored on a category in Category Markup. When someone creates a new price book or inventory item in that category, those fields can pre-fill automatically.

How to access

  1. Go to Settings → Category Markup (/settings/category-markup).
  2. Find the category row (note context: Price book, Inventory, or All).
  3. Click Edit on the category.

What you can do today

  • Define default attribute name/value pairs per category.
  • Scope defaults to Price book, Inventory, or All contexts.
  • Pre-fill the Attributes section when staff creates a new item in that category.
  • Merge new attribute keys from saved items back into category defaults over time (as your team adopts common fields).

Prerequisites

  • Admin or settings access to Category Markup.
  • Categories already defined for your price book or inventory taxonomy.
  • Team agreement on consistent attribute names (spelling and capitalization).

Step-by-step

Set up category attributes

  1. Settings → Category Markup.
  2. Edit the target category.
  3. Under Default attributes, add pairs—for example:
    • Brand → (leave blank for staff to fill per item)
    • Warranty → 1 year
  4. Choose the correct context (Price book, Inventory, or All).
  5. Save.

What happens when staff creates an item

  1. Price Book or Inventory → Add.
  2. Select a Category with default attributes.
  3. The Attributes section pre-fills (new items only—not when editing existing items).
  4. Adjust per-item values and save.

Current limitations

  • Defaults apply on create, not when changing category on an existing item.
  • There is no bulk “push category defaults to all existing items” action.
  • Attribute search/filter depth varies by list view; not every attribute is a first-class filter column.
  • Public website attribute search depends on widget configuration (see Website Widgets).

  • Bulk apply category attribute templates to existing items.
  • Richer filtering and reporting by attribute across price book and inventory.
  • Validation rules (required attributes per category).
